Self-Ligating Braces

Self-Ligating Braces look a lot like traditional metal braces, but the difference is in how they work to straighten your teeth. We offer two varieties of self-ligating braces at the Jacksonville University School of Orthodontics. They are Empower Self-Ligating Braces and Lotus Passive Self-Ligating brackets.

How Do Self-Ligating Braces Work?

The main difference between how self-ligating and traditional braces work has to do with elastic ligatures or ties. On traditional metal braces, these ties are the colorful ties on each bracket. Self-ligating braces do not use those elastic ties. Instead, a metal “door” is used to hold the wire in place. A sliding and clipping system in these doors holds the wire in place. This system reduces the pressure on your teeth and can make treatment more efficient.

Why Choose Self-Ligating Braces?

  • Potentially fewer and shorter appointments
  • Less pressure on your teeth during movement
  • Some designs have smooth edges and a low profile (simply low, traditional brackets) for improved comfort and appearance
